CSEE Celebrates Record Achievements on State ELA Exam
Sixth Grade Scores 100% Proficiency on State ELA Exam

YONKERS, NEW YORK, May 15, 2009 – The Charter School of Educational Excellence (CSEE), Westchester County’s first public char ter school, experienced record improvements on the 2008-2009 New York State ELA exam. CSEE outperformed the Yonkers City School District and the State in the percentage of third, fourth, and sixth grade students performing at a proficient level.
“The results our students achieved are a prime example of the hard work that occurs at our school each and every day,” said Catalina Castillo, Principal of the Charter School of Educational Excellence. “The improvements our students attained truly exemplifies the impact we are having on the children of this community.”
CSEE’s third and sixth grades achieved the most significant gains on the 2008-2009 exam. Compared to last years results, the percentage of third grade students performing at a proficient level increased 127%. CSEE’s sixth grade class also experienced remarkable gains. On the 2008-2009 ELA exam, 100% of CSEE’s sixth grade students tested at level 3 or 4. Many of the students who took the exam as sixth graders this year, entered the school in 2005 as third grade students. Over their four years at CSEE, the number of students testing at the proficient level has increased over 376%. Please see the chart below for year by year results.
“The results CSEE earned on this year’s ELA exam attest to the dedication of the staff and students’ potential ,” said Dr. Margaret Harrington, Victory Schools’ Chief Operating Officer. “CSEE is a prime example of the results that can be achieved when students are given a choice in their education. We are all very proud of CSEE’s success and look forward to continued improvement in the years to come.”
